I found this cool video online. To the best of my knowledge this is an initiative that was launched in Vietnam to help with the plastic waste in that country. It is scheduled to extend to other Asian countries in the future. It looks like an amazing concept. Check out the video to see how Coca-Cola is giving their plastic bottles second lives.Coke created various “second life” tools that could be attached to the top of the empty bottles in lieu of the original cap. Some of the devices included a paintbrush, pencil sharpener, bubble-blower, water gun, shampoo dispenser, children’s toy, spray bottle, night-light, and a sauce dispenser.
As a salvage queen and repurposing junkie, I think that this is absolutely genius. Why didn’t anyone think of this sooner?
I thought I’d share a story …. one that will likely transcend time. You know those stories that begin with, “Do you remember that time….”. Perhaps my children will one day tell their children of our little adventure and miracle. If you read my blog regulary, you will know that I have a strong faith and I learned many years ago, that there is no request too big or too small for God. It was from our pastor that I learned there was no such thing as “wasting” a prayer. Thanks to his stories about his wife Sally praying for parking spots, I have also found that with a little prayer, I too can have “rock star” parking! We have taught our kids the power of a prayer and when any situation arises….we pray, trust, believe and then wait.
No Gas…Are You Kidding Me?
Our family made a day trip out to my Auntie Lynn’s funeral on Friday. The weather was good, the service was beautiful and the hours after spent with family were wonderful. After a full and very long day, we got back in the van to begin the 3 1/2 hour drive back to Winnipeg. We were heading out about 7:45, so knew it would be 11:15 or so before we’d get home. Tim is a night hawk, so the thought of driving back after a long day really wasn’t a big deal. Our route took us along #1 Highway, past Brandon.
I’m not one to play around with the gas gauge, I will always play it safe and fill up long before the needle gets close to the big “E”. However, I was not driving and therefor not really paying attention to the gas. We got about 15 minutes past Brandon when Tim casually said, “Oh, we’ll need to stop for gas.” Tim is a born and raised city boy, used to having access to whatever he needs 24/7. I am a country girl. When and where I grew up, the stores were closed Sundays and Mondays and there was no such thing as a Convenience Store. Clearly things have changed in my home town as well, but I knew this highway well enough to know that there weren’t many gas stations along it and I would venture a guess that those that existed, closed early.
So, as we tooted along on our very low tank of gas, we came to the town of Carberry. Carberry sits along the highway, but you have to exit and travel off the highway a bit of a distance (which seemed like a mile or two, especially when you’re running on fumes) to get into town. Our gas was low enough that we were already nervous about making it in to town and finding a gas station before we ran out. We found the two town gas stations, but both closed at 9 p.m. and it was now around 9:30. As were driving down the street, we saw two guys outside the town bar. We stopped and asked them how far to the closest gas station, but they weren’t much help. I’m not sure if their “bellies were already full” or what, but they were zero help and did nothing more than waste our time and gas as we sat idling while they tried to think outside the borders of their small town. One actually thought he might be able to tell us how far to the closest gas station if he had a calculator. Ugh! We moved on and went back to the first gas station, as there were a few lights on even though the sign said “closed” and it looked to be closed. Tim knocked on the door to see if anyone was inside, but no one was there. A local man pulled in the parking lot and told us we would have to go back to the highway and head to Austin (Manitoba….not Texas, thankfully!!) He said it was about 20 minutes down the highway. The man left and we prayed. We knew there was absolutely no way we had gas to get there. We had been on empty for longer than seemed possible and there was no way we could make it 20 minutes more.
Only By the Grace of God:
So, we did the only thing we could and prayed that we would make it to Austin and find an open gas station. Shay has a great sense of humour and is definitely the family clown. For months now, he has been looking for the perfect scenerio to use the tag line from Carrie Underwood’s song “Jesus Take the Wheel”. Well, you can bet you picked up on this right away and declared it “Jesus Take the Wheel!” and thankfully, he did.
We got back on the highway and tried to pass the 37 km by playing games, singing and telling jokes. (Shay provided most of the entertainment.) We pulled up to the Co-op gas station just outside of Austin at 9:59 p.m. and Tim began to pump the gas. In the middle of pumping, all of the lights on the pumps went out as the station closed at 10:00 p.m. When the pump stopped, it didn’t go unnoticed that our 75 litre gas tank accepted 74.87 litres of gas before it automatically shut off. We were literally down to 1/2 cup of gas and had we been even a minute later we would have been out of luck. Thank the Lord for taking care of all of the circumstances and giving us yet another example of his faithfulness. I love watching as miracles unfold, both big and small for it is through the smaller miracles like finding a parking spot, that you build your faith and belief for those bigger situations.
When I was looking for a gas gauge picture for the post, I found one on The Heart of Abba and pastor Ron told a “running out of gas story” as well. I loved this quote that was taken from his article.
The favor of God is not even affected by our immediate circumstances… our job, our family, or even our gas gauge. The favor of God is about His goodness and His faithfulness. We receive God’s favor, not because we are good, but because HE is good.
Hopefully this has inspired you. It doesn’t matter what you are going through, there is no circumstance too big or too small. Just have faith and believe. Be patient and know he is acting on your behalf. Enjoy your Sunday!
Another of my favourite Mexican appetizers is this delicious hot layered dip. It is one of those dips that tends to keep you hovering around the food table…just can’t get enough!
Ingredients:
one package of taco seasoning
one can of refried beans
1/2 to 1 cup of sour cream (sorry I just spread it until the layer is covered)
salsa
shredded cheddar
sliced black olives (optional)
nacho chips
Mix the taco seasoning with the refried beans and spread evenly in a shallow flat bottomed oven proof dish. (I use a quiche plate.) Spread a layer of sour cream over the bean mixture. Top with a layer of salsa. Sprinkle shredded cheddar on top and add olives, if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Serve piping hot with nachos.
It is with great sadness that we are off to celebrate the life of my Auntie Lynn today. After the service, we are heading out to family farm where my Auntie Lynn and Uncle Murray raised their family. I am not sure who all will be there, but we have a large family with members stretched from coast to coast. It is only a year since my Grandma passed away and the family joined to celebrate her life. We meet again much too soon or at least too soon to be gathering for another lost icon in our family. Despite the terrible loss, it will be nice to catch-up with everyone and I thought I would take a few Mexican appetizers to help feed the masses when the service is over and family gather at the farm. There are many versions of this recipe. I got this one from a friend several years ago and am not sure of the original source. It is an easy and yummy appetizer that would also make a great snack or lunch for kids.
Mexican Tortilla Roll-Ups
Ingredients:
1 package of cream cheese (8 0z or 250g)
1/3 cup of sour cream
1 Tablespoon of salsa (I added 2 T.)
3 chopped green onions
Juice of one lime
1 large package of flour tortillas
1 Tablespoon of taco seasoning (This isn’t in the original recipe, but I added it to mine.)
Mix the ingredients in a bowl. Scoop some of the mixture on each tortilla and spread it to cover the surface. Roll the tortilla like a cinnamon roll. Store in layers, covering each layer with a damp paper towel. Store in an air tight container in the fridge. When you are ready to serve them, cut each roll into 1″ slices and serve with extra salsa.
This is the best yet! It may be referred to as smoothie #3, but it’s definitely #1 on my list! I absolutely love this concoction. In fact, I drank it up before it even occurred to me to take picture!
Strawberry Pineapple Smoothie Ingredients:
1 cup of frozen pineapple chunks
1 cup of fresh strawberries
1/4 to 1/2 cup of apple juice
Throw the ingredients in the blender and voila….a delicious smoothie. Add some chia seeds for protein, if you wish. The apple juice adds the extra liquid you need as well as this awesome burst of flavour. I like that it doesn’t have yogurt or anything milky….very good!
*I didn’t do this, but I am guessing you could swap the strawberries and pineapple (ie frozen strawberries and fresh pineapple) and get the same result. If both fruits are frozen, you will need to compensate with more juice and this will alter the flavour.
I can’t believe Shay turns 10 today and is now in double digits! I always feels like he gets the short end of the stick with a June birthday. As a teacher, I am smack dab in the middle of the busiest time of the year and my mind is totally consumed with the 46 report cards I have to write. On top of that, I have a staff meeting after school and both kids have soccer games tonight. We are trying to squeeze in a quick dinner out between my meeting and the first soccer game. Not a great day to celebrate, but I thought I could at least try to get his day off to a great start. I decided to sneak upstairs after he was asleep (which meant I had to stay up late, so that was a great feat in and of itself) and decorate his door, so he’ll wake up to a surprise in the morning. I’m just hoping it doesn’t backfire, as he is obsessive about his door being left wide open and often wakes up in the night with a nose bleed. So, I am hoping he sleeps through the night and isn’t too put off by the closed door when he wakes up in the morning. Who could be upset once they get showered with balloons on their birthday?
Happy birthday Shay…I hope you have an awesome day!
Several years ago, I came across this recipe for a homemade weed killer. It was shared by Shell Busey. I love the fact that it doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals, so I don’t have to worry about it being harmful for small children or the neighbourhood pets that like to frequent our yard. The only caution with this mixture is that it will kill your grass and flowers if you spray it on them by accident. He suggests only using this to kill the weeds that may crop up on your driveway, sidewalk or through ground cover.
Shell Busey’s Homemade Weed Killer Recipe:
Mix the following ingredients together:
4 cups of white vinegar
1/4 cup of table salt
2 tsp of liquid dish soap
Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and spray it on your weeds when it is sunny and hot out.
I have posted about making invitations before, but this is about as simple as you get. You just make a full page invitation on the computer and then duplicate the page three times, so that you have a total of 4 copies of the invitation. You then print it in colour on card stock and choose the printing option that allows you to print 4 pages on one page. Each invitation then ends up being 1/4 of a page in size, similar to that of a postcard. I originally tried making the invitation with a plain white background and then printing it onto black card stock, but the ink didn’t show up well. I ended up inserting a black rectangle and then “sending it to the background”, so that all of the text and lasers sat in front of the black rectangle. Of course, this meant that it used more ink to print the invitations, but when you are able to fit 4 per page, it really isn’t too bad.
Here is an example of the invitation and thank-you note page I made for Shay’s party.
This is one of the guns I bought at the craft sale.
I picked-up a few marshmallow guns at our church’s craft sale at Christmas time and immediately knew I could make these. It has taken me 6 months, but I finally decided to buy the materials and put together a batch of guns. Shay is having a laser tag party for his 10th birthday and I thought these would make great “loot”. I always prefer to give away one or two bigger items as opposed to a bag of candy. (Shay would probably prefer the bag of candy, but I try to steer away from it if I can.)
Materials:
1/2″ white PVC pipe (15″ per gun)
one 1/2″ Tee fitting
two 1/2″ 90 degree angle fittings
one end cap
one coupling (optional)
acetone
spray paint (optional)
coloured tape (optional)
miniature marshmallows for ammunition
Instructions:
Clean the printing off the PVC pipe and fittings. I ended up using acetone that I had on hand. (Some suggested using very fine grit sandpaper, but I didn’t do this.) I then washed all of the fittings and the long pipe with hot soapy water.
Cut the long tube of PVC. I used our mitre saw and it was super quick and easy. You will need: one 6″ piece, one 3″ piece and three 2″ pieces for each gun.
Assemble the gun by following the diagram. I did not glue the pieces together, but simply pushed the pieces together firmly.
Spray paint the guns if you wish. You can personalize or embellish the guns with coloured tape or leave them plain.
This project was very simple to make. The cost was approximately $4.35 per gun, but I had the spray paint on hand. If we weren’t going to a Laser Tag facility and were having a home party, I might have given the pieces for the gun, put out some coloured tape and had the boys build and personalize their own gun at the party. However, for Shay’s birthday, we are simply giving a completed gun and “ammunition” as loot.
Here are 6/10 of the guns….the rest are still drying.
Wash all of the PVC pieces.
Cut the pieces to the specified lengths.
Assemble according to this diagram.
Assembled gun
Here are the 10 guns I made.
To use the gun, place a miniature marshmallow just inside the open end of the top piece where the “coupling” goes (if you use one ~ it isn’t necessary according to other instructions I saw). Place your mouth over the end and blow a quick hard breath into the tube. The marshmallow will shoot with a surprising amount of speed and force. Although marshmallows are soft and relatively harmless, I wouldn’t want to be responsible for an eye injury. If giving them as gifts, you might want to get some goggles to go with the gun. (These would also make great stocking stuffers at Christmas time.)
